- Find the story you're meant to tell-What are you hoping to convey? why a documentary? why are you the right person to tell this story? These are questions you will probably be asked in the pitching part of your project. Taking time to reflect on them yourself will lead you to a story you're really passionate about.
- RESEARCH-research is one of the most important phases of pre-production. It is also a massive basis for your script, always look deep into the subject in order to find ways to inform but also surprise your audience.
- Outline your documentary-Organise and plan how you want your story to be transmitted to your audience. When you have an outline in your head, it makes it easier to shoot because you already know what you want.
- Connect your viewer -Viewers want to be invested in your project. Having protagonists with compelling stories will cause your viewers to open up and understand the complexity of the issues you are trying to highlight.
- Declare your point of view-what do you want your project to broadcast? presenting the facts and reality isn't always unbiased as there is information that will stay and information that will be cut.
- Fine tune your project-Be thorough with your writing. Part of the process is writing and editing your script as you continue to expand on your message, fact checking is also important to make sure you are giving your viewer the most accurate information possible.
Writing your script
The first column is optional but is used by filmmakers as a guide of narrative. Video and Audio columns are a standard and are formatted so that the visuals line up with the audio (interview, narration, music, etc.) that plays over them.
You have to work backwards while writing a documentary script. Once you have collected your research, data, and interviews, only then can you write the script. Without research, it would be impossible to conceive what an interviewee is going to say and how that ties into your message.
