Documentary plan
Brief-Sunderland Culture are holding a mixed media exhibition, which will be titled 'who am i?'. The exhibition will be held at the National Glass centre and Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens. Young Practioners have been asked to explored and develop ideas for media work relating to theme of 'Regional Identity', Which explores the question 'Who am i?'.
The aim is to engage young people and to encourage them to think about and express their own regional identity.
My idea
My Regional Identity Project will be about being LGBT in the North East.
I came about this idea because, as a queer person myself, I felt that I did not know where to turn for support or to learn about the history of queer people in the northeast.
The North East of England is very rooted in its working-class history, due to its old mining communities and shipyards. The attitudes towards queer people are unfortunately still very outdated and the culture of the northeast is often very hostile towards young queer people.
I want to understand the community around me better and I am sure an overwhelming amount of other queer people do as well. I would like to highlight some of the north easts' LGBTQIA+ charities, history, support groups while also looking at what secondary schools and colleges are doing for their LGBT pupils.
I have been gathering contacts to interview for this documentary such as College Teachers, Pride Chair members, Secondary school Teachers and Students.
This project to me, will not only be beneficial to people in the community but also, I feel like would maybe break down some of the old attitudes that still exist in the northeast. By showing people, that queer culture and queer people aren't hiding anymore and that the world is adapting for them as well.
Project Style
The brief states that the project has to be a piece of media that can be showcased in the Sunderland cultures exhibition.
The work that I have been loving recently is documentary work and I felt like it would fit in most with the idea that I have.
From researching through documentary styles, I feel like for the type of subject I am doing that. For my project, PARTICIPATORY style would be the best, as I knew that I wanted to be involved in a lot of the footage and have a lot of interviews within my work.
For this project, I felt more that I wanted to do a docuseries. Breaking up each section I talk about it into different parts. I felt as although this was a lot of work, it would make more sense than having something that was put all together as I knew each section would not flow correctly into the next.
POTENTIAL INTERVIEWEES
Ste is the director of Northern Pride, a charity that hosts one of the biggest pride festivals in the northeast with over 40,000 people attending every year.
Northern Pride's promise is to protect LGBT rights, promote education for the community and straight allies and provide several LGBT events to bring the communities closer together.
Durham's sixth form is a mixed sixth form located in Durham, they recently started up their pride society again (2020).
I am hoping to interview, Roman Law (the student who has been in charge of the pride group) and a few other students to learn about how they feel about being LGBT in the northeast and what they think about their sixth forms' pride society.
Seaham High School- Pride group
Seaham High School is my old secondary school.
When I attended, there was talk between me and some members of staff about starting an LGBT group for some students. However, nothing came of it when I was there.
I was delighted to find out that they now have an LGBT group and are a part of the stonewall society for schools.
I would like to have the opportunity to sit in on one of their meetings and interview the teacher in charge, Mrs Davis.
Sunderland College-True colours
Sunderland college started its pride society in 2020. It is the college that I am currently attending and have been a member of the group for nearly a year now.
I am hoping to interview some fellow members and either steven or Gillian as the leader of the group.
